I talked about how difficult it is to be child-free, when popular culture fetishises parenthood in general and motherhood in particular. When the dramatic arc of all TV dramas, of all rom-coms, is dependent on someone becoming pregnant and finding true happiness as a consequence. Babies are the newest archetype on the happy ending, therefore not wanting them is tantamount to not wanting to be happy.

a song that i never quite understood the “hidden” meaning of , until few years back. actually did’nt know if there was a hidden meaning to this. thats explains.

every now and then, the wanderer in me wakes up from slumber . i then suddenly feel this overwhelming sense of breaking off all shackles and to run away from the mundane into the wild. to anywhere but here. may be buy a Gypsy and in the process ,become a Gypsy. why not do that? yes, i say why not?

because its not diesel.

how i wish maruti suzuki’d plonk the 1.3DDis into the Gypsy’s heart. so, next time you see me *talking* all adventureous but not *doing* it , blame khattar ji.

we choose the group of people we want to live with, in multistory apartments, housing societies or even ghettos.

people do make a conscious effort to check on their would-be neighbours. that’s the way it ( whether you and i like or not ) generally works. nothing wrong in that but at least this is something people do have some control over.

now ,in contrast, road is a great levellar,it does not make such social/economical distinctions. so nexttime somebody cuts you in traffic ,think.

Friday Evening

coming back home this Friday eve, i was thinking of so many things
1.this week’s been hectic in office
2.tuesday i can go biking
3.sunday morning i can watch repeat of “Long Way Round”. etc etc…
then i saw this little boy ,serving tea outside a roadside stall. a boy whose fingers will go numb serving hot cup of teas over and over again,all his life ,maybe. (god bless him)
now, what must he be thinking on a”Friday Evening”??

Mumbai-Baroda-Mumbai 11-14May’06

when i came to know that Vijay is getting married, my first question was ,where?? Baroda? the answer came in a Yes and immidiately i knew its a fantastic opportunity for a ride. what it also meant was a long awaited reunion with school friends and good’ol times!
Manik and Kunal, iknew, will be game for it . Bipin pulled out at the last minute so it was left to 3 of us to ride on.

Picked up Kunal at 04:00AM and left for Manik’s place in Andheri. We finally managed to hit the Mumbai-Ahemdabad Highway around 05:00AM. One thing that amazes me is that how quickly and willingly all of us guys get ready for an early mornin ride , we never knew we were so efficient
This was my first time on NH-8 and it was a dream to ride on . the ride was uneventful with miles and miles of smooth tarmac. it was pleasant till 10:00AM and we had fun with all those B’fast, Tea & Pee breaks but after that the sun was out in full fury and that sinking feeling began to creep in. you know the usual – - – its too hot man !!! the bike is boiling !!! i can not feel my back !!!! fry egg on my helmet !!!! one thing we learned , think twice and plan well , really really well , before you venture out on the highways on your motorcycle in summer . it CAN get really ugly at times:-)
Still, Thunderbirds being Thunderbirds , took all the beating (a royal salute to Royal Enfield from all 3 of us) and took us home safely and we reached baroda around 16:00 . at the end of it we were quite happy with our performance considering the amount of planning ( read Zero) we ‘d put in .
Next couple of days were enjoyable and relatively comfortable as we did not do any hard riding . Vicky played a perfect host and we got to see baroda through his car’s window. One thing that i’ve noticed is that its an offence to call these so called smaller cities , small . u can get anything that u can possibly think of in Baroda . well , O the times they are a changin–Dylan!!!!

Left Baroda @ 19:00 and we knew where we wanted to stop for the night – Surat. The Night driving was pleasant in a way that it was easy on the rider as well as the machine. could not find any decent ( read cheap ) hotel on the highway so had to go 15Km into Surat City , which was okay but it caused forced delay next morning when we lost our way and more importantly ,time in the early morning traffic.
Lesson Learned:: Overnight Stay, closer to highway.Always.

Surat-Daman is just over 125Km and we knew today is the day for easy riding. NH-8 is so spotless and uneventful that it sometimes get a tad boring sitting on the bike and staring at the road ahead but we are not complaining , we’ll take the good roads , anyday:-)
I was excited to visit Daman as i’d heard a lot bout this place .Manik and Kunal’ve been to Daman before and have friends in Vapi (closer to daman).
Again , It was time for their friends(especially ,satya) to play host and we really had a wonderful time in Daman.
Playing Cricket after so many years , 10 May be? , on jampore Beach , brought back memories from school days .

With Mumbai less than 200Km away , we knew what we wanted to do . cruise.
Pollution, dust , noise ..welcomet to mumbai.
We (myself and Kunal) parted ways fro manik just before Borivali and finally managed to reach CBD Belapur around 13:00.
